Procedures of Teaching

1. Orientation

In the first week of our stay at UPI, we had an orientation with our coordinator Mr. Arif Hidayat, Rector Didi Sukyadi, Ma’am Intan Pratidina Dewi, and our Cooperative Teachers. There, they discussed what we were about to do for our one-month stay at UPI. Aside from teaching the students, we will have an excursion every weekend to introduce us to their culture and other beautiful places that you need to visit when you are going to Bandung City, Indonesia. After the meeting with the faculty, we talked to our respective coordinating teachers to explain to us the topics that we needed to teach for the following weeks and what are the things that we needed to prepare when we were teaching. For me, I need to handle three sections which are grade 10 and grade 11. For the grade 10, it is the Bilingual section and for the grade 11, it is the regular section. That is why every week I needed to prepare two lesson plans.

2. Observations

In the second week, I observed my coordinating teacher teaching her students in Bilingual class. There I saw what kind of strategies she was using and one of those is being a facilitator instead of just teaching the students the lesson. She facilitates them one by one and sees if they understand the lesson. They have an 80-minute class for math subjects the pacing of the discussion is slower because the teacher is making sure that the students understand the lesson before proceeding to the next topic. I observed the three sections and after that, my cooperative teacher asked me to give them an exercise for the following day and let me handle the class by myself.

3. Create a lesson plan

The lesson plan that I used was just the same lesson plan that we are using in the Philippines. For the bilingual class, I made a detailed lesson plan and for the regular class, I made a semi-detailed lesson plan.

4 . Practice teaching

In the third week, I started teaching the classes using the lesson plan and PowerPoint presentation that I made. At first, I was a little bit nervous since it was my first time teaching students from different countries with different cultures and also, I was afraid that they might not understand what I was teaching since the language that I used was English. Turns out it was fun teaching them because they are very active in class and also, they have respect for me. I can see their fun while doing the activity that I gave them. It was very fulfilling at the end of the day.

5. Final demonstration teaching

On February 17, 2025, I did my demo teaching in Bilingual class by being assessed by my cooperative teacher Ma’am Hanifah Nurrahmi. After the demo teaching my cooperative teacher gave me feedback in the form of an evaluation form and she also gave a comment regarding by demo teaching. Overall, it was a very fun and fulfilling experience for me. I learned a lot of lessons from my teacher on how to improve my teaching skills.

Time management and organizing activities

In 80 minutes of class time, I just follow my lesson plan. For the discussion part, I always make sure to have an exercise after so that I can see if the students understand the lesson. After that, we had a group activity and evaluation. The class time in UPI is longer than the class time in the Philippines which is why I was able to manage it well and was able to do what’s in my lesson plan.

Classroom Management

•During the discussion I encourage the students to solve problems on the board. I also gave them exercises after the discussion in which they need to answer by themselves and they can come to me to check their works.

•The seating arrangement during the discussion is just the same as their sitting arrangement but during their activity, they need to arrange their seat with their groupmates for them to talk easier and discuss their answers with their groupmates.

Problem-solving while teaching and staying in the designated school

•Some students are not listening to the discussion.

•The whiteboard in Bilingual class is small which is why it is hard to present my PowerPoint presentation while discussing on the board because we don’t have enough space.

•I always encourage the students to be active during the classroom discussion but some of them is not that fluent in English which is why they can’t understand what I am saying.
